Welcome to the Bike's & Bio's Page of the GlobeRiders Cape to Cairo Expedition 2016 Live!Journal!

This is the "up close" and personal Chapter of the Cape to Cairo Expedition 2016 Live!Journal.  I've asked each of our riders to share a little about themselves, and also provide a couple of favorite photos to go along with their Bio's. You may not be with them in the flesh, but at least you can learn a bit more about them virtually.

This is going to be a fascinating adventure. Not only do our participants get to experience the wonders of the African Continent on their own bike's, but they also get to meet local people off the beaten track, taste the cuisine and immerse themselves in the amazing history of this mystical part of the world.

It's my privilege to introduce the members of the GlobeRiders Cape to Cairo Expedition 2016.

Best Regards,

Helge Pedersen

Fred Bauer - Tübingen, Germany

2012 BMW R1200GS Adventure

I am from Germany and my name is Fred Bauer (Architect)

To ride motorcycles is the passion of my wife Birgit (BMW GS 1200 LC) and me (BMW GS 1200 adv + BMW GS 1200 LC).

I think one of the reasons why we are married for 36 years is that my wife shares with me this hobby.

This is the second tour with Helge. I did 2013 Los Angeles - Patagonia, it was impressive!

In our "real" life we have an architecture office and property developer company.

Let me say thank you to my employees:

Birgit - my wife and manager and the economist of our family business.
Stefanie - my daughter and architect
Peter - architect
Martin - architect
Matthias - architect
Kai - architect
Jana - property broker
Pia - property broker

My philosophy is: If you like to do something - do it.

Mike McNulty - Orange, CA, USA

2010 BMW R1200GS

My name is Mike McNulty. This trip will be my 4th with GlobeRiders. I rode the Silk Road in 2011, South America in 2013 and Indochina in 2014. I have made several other motorcycle trips to Mexico, North Africa and South America.

I have been married for 47 years to my wife Marilyn. We live in Southern California and have 2 children and 4 grand children. I have owned a semi truck trailer sales and leasing business for 37 years.

I am lucky to have a son and son-in-law to run the business while I play. My other interests are hunting and flying.

I am looking forward to ride with old friends, Fred and Helge, and new friend Yves.

Yves Gouzer - Geneva, Switzerland

2004 BWM R1200GS

About Yves . . .

Age 68.

Swiss national from French origins (Brittany), living in Geneva Switzerland. Business career in ocean freight first with Cargill and then with Swiss ship owning company Massoel.

I can describe myself as an occasional biker.

Main riding trips:

  • 2003 Uttaranchal (India) with a rented 500cc Royal Enfield.
  • And then everything with a BMW 1200 GS which I still own today
    • 2004 About 10000 km to East Europe and Turkey.
    • 2005 North America from New York City to LA via Montreal, Calgary and Grand Canyon.
    • 2007 A memorable silk road from Geneva to Xian with GlobeRiders.

Then not much in terms of riding until 2016 and this Cape Town to Cairo (we were stopped in Addis Ababa) with Helge and two other riders
which turned out to be a brilliant and most enjoyable experience.

My poor old GS has now over 53,000 miles but never had a single problem so I will carry on with it a bit more.

Other than riding, my main outdoor activities apart from going to the office most days are sailing, skiing and playing tennis,
but I am already looking forward to another trip with GlobeRiders.

Yves

Helge Pedersen (Tour Leader) - Hansville, WA, USA

2015 BMW R1200GS Adventure

Having completed two previous “test” runs of the Cape to Cairo motorcycle journey this will the third and final custom Expedition of this tour. Next year we are planning to make the Cape to Cairo a GlobeRiders Adventure. It has been a lot of work getting all puzzles of this complex and rather difficult project to get ready to be classified a GlobeRiders Adventure and now we are almost there.

My first adventure in the the world of Adventure motorcycle touring started in 1982 and the first destination was Africa. I spent 2 years from Norway to Cape Town and finally back to Norway. Since then I have been lucky to return to this wonderful continent to discover even more places while riding my beemer. How lucky can one be?

With the above experience we have been able to build up a solid network of partners and support for the GlobeRiders Adventures in Africa. If you choose to ride with us we have done the legwork and feel very confident that you will have a ride of a lifetime.

To me personally riding in Africa is not just about the nature and animals that fascinate me, but more than anything meeting the local people and making friends as we ride from the southern tip to the north through Eastern Africa.

Ride Far – Ride Safe!
