This is the "up close" and personal Chapter of the Silk Road Adventure 2015 Live!Journal.  I've asked each of our riders to share a little about themselves, and also provide a couple of favorite photos to go along with their Bio's. You may not be with them in the flesh, but at least you can learn a bit more about them virtually.

This is going to be a fascinating adventure. Not only do our participants get to experience the wonders of the Silk Road on their own bike's, but they also get to meet local people off the beaten track, taste the cuisine and immerse themselves in the amazing history along this mystical journey.

We are 59 & 58 years old, married and parents to 3 wonderful children (31, 27, 24).

Kainan is an experienced biker and in the last few years made quite a few bike trips around the world: Mongolia, Cambodia, Baja, Turkey, Cairo to Cape Town, South America, Newfoundland and cross Canada, Southern Africa and many more. He will be riding a KTM990, and also owns 3 other KTM990s and a Husaberg TE300.

Shiree dislikes motorcycles, and will join a section of the trip (Uzbekistan to China) in the chase car.

I’m 73 years old and a retired container ship captain. I went to sea for 44 years and loved every minute of it. But it may explain why I am divorced. I have 3 kids and 3 grandkids. I grew up in the San Fernando Valley and have lived in Sausalito, Squaw Valley, Mendocino, and for the last 38 years in Santa Barbara/Goleta.

I’ve been riding on and off for over 50 years, mostly off. I started off with a Chushman scooter, then a couple of Honda scramblers. After graduating from the California Maritime Academy my riding days were over, except for a trip down to Cabo San Lucas in 1969, until my 2 oldest sons were old enough to ride. We rode together off road for a few years but then they found out about girls and our riding days were numbered.

I got into adventure riding around 12 years ago. I’ve done a number of cross country trips, Prudhoe Bay, Guatemala, Ecuador, the Alps, and many trips all over Mexico. I was also fortunate enough to ride with Helge and a great group of riders in Africa in 2013. I had such an incredible time that I knew I had to do something like that again. I had made up my mind to ride the Silk Road while i was still in Africa.

This is going to be another incredible adventure. I’m really looking forward to visiting Turkey, Iran, and China. I’ll be riding a 2013 BMW F800GSA. This bike has served me well. I also have 2010 BMW F800GS.

My hobbies, besides motorcycles, are golf, skiing and spoiling my grandchildren (ages 7 to 21).

Ian Craigie here; most recently of beautiful Bellingham Washington. Being a Canadian with a Green card some might consider me doubly dangerous, but it's (mostly) just a facade. I am now and have been for some time self-employed as a freelance computer programmer specializing in embedded real time OS control systems. Previous lives have seen me as a geologist and rock-n-roll roadie among other things.

There are a bunch of bikes in my garage and I like to ride them all as often and as far as I can. My house is easy to spot -just look for the ever growing pile of tread bare motorcycle tires out front. For this trip a BMW F800GS will be pulled out of the quiver, and even after all the modifications a close inspection will reveal the little bit of BMW that yet still remains.

There are parts of the world that I have absolutely no interest at all in (northern Indiana for example), and then there is Central Asia. You tell me why a kid growing up in Prince George British Columbia would become so enthralled with a place only known from books and National Geographic magazines. At one point I was sternly reprimanded for trying to slip the words mosque and minaret into a grade 5 vocabulary jumble. Later to be"corrected" under duress as mosquito and miniature.

I have been looking forward to this trip from the very first time it was run and it is just starting to sink in that now I get to ride the Silk Road.

I live in Lawrence, Kansas not far from the dairy farm I grew up on. I retired from public education where I was a teacher, coach and administrator for the past 30 years. My wife and I have traveled to several locations around the world over the years and we plan to travel to many more.

I started riding when I was about 12 years old on a Rupp Roadster mini bike. I advanced to bigger and faster bikes over the years and I currently ride a 2006 Honda ST-1300 and the 2010 BMW R1200 GSA that I am taking on this trip. A few project bikes (Honda, Suzuki and Hodaka) are also in the garage.

This trip for me started several years ago with the reading of the book “The Long Way Around” where Ewan McGregor and a friend traveled around the world on motorcycles. I thought this was the most exciting thing I had heard of and pursued learning about this type of travel. My brothers and friends started taking 7-10 day trips to different locations within the United States. They were great trips but I still had this around the world trip in the back of my mind.

Then I caught the TV series on the Silk Road Trail Adventure by GlobeRiders and decided that this was the trip I wanted to take. That was several years ago. Getting retired, getting the proper bike, taking a riding class from RawHyde, getting the proper gear and signing up for this trip, have lead me to the 2015 Silk Road Adventure Tour.

I always find it interesting when we go to new places and see how other people live. It’s always exciting to see things that are unique to the area we are visiting. I believe that this trip will be an experience of a lifetime and we will get to see a part of the world that not many people get the chance to.

I look forward to riding in this historical area and hope to meet new friends in faraway places.

I am a self-employed gardener. The bike is a 2009 R1200 GS. The bike has a GSA gear box and a Touratech suspension and ceramic clutch. The mechanic for the bike is Alex Guth, www.alyxmoto.com. The front fork rake was reduced; the rear wheel was modified to accept a car tire which matches the tire on the sidecar. When the bike returned from the latest GlobeRiders trip extensive redesign of the sidecar frame and mounting was undertaken to implement what was learned from the previous trips. The original bike modifications and sidecar manufacture, and redesign work, were accomplished by Claude Stanley, www.freedomsidecars.com.

We’re incredibly fortunate to be riding once more with Helge. We’re looking forward to the excellent company of good old friends and new ones too. We think the sidecar’s fully mended from the last adventure, ready for new exploits (abuses?) and destinations – and so are we!

I was born in Hungary in 1978 and moved with my parents to Moscow at the age of 8, where I grew up and finished school. Between 1994 and 1996 I have finished my A-level education in a boarding school in Pathos, Cyprus. In 1996 I moved to Spain where I have done my university education and started my professional career.

I spent 2 year working as a Marketing Assistant in a multinational company, where I have discovered that working for others was not my thing. I started several companies over the past 15 years; Importing Medical equipment from Russia to Manufacturing Garments in China. I'm currently running a Courier Company in Spain which I have been restructuring and building for the past 4 years.

I have been riding since I was 10 years old starting with 50cc and slowly moving up the scale over the past 20 years to 1200cc. Never been on a tour before, although dreamt about it for the past 5 years, ever since I came across Helges DVD on Adventure Riding.

I am David Dardaris, 66 years of age, and I have been riding bikes for some 40+ years. I have been married even longer than that, 45 years with my beautiful wife Donna. We don’t have any children. Donna never has cared much for riding on the bike with me, and since I had an accident in 1999, hasn’t ridden on 2 wheels with me at all. But she lets me take my bike trips, which I truly appreciate. We take turns with each other, one staying home with the dogs and cats while the other vacations.

The first decade and a half of my riding was mostly what I call “local stuff” – riding around where I lived, riding to work, that kind of stuff. Eventually evolved to longer day trips, like Syracuse NY to Alexandria VA to visit a friend for a few days, then from VA to Chicago to visit my sister, on to Madison Wis to see another friend, then back home from Wis to NY. Some serious “day” rides, but still, no more than a day’s ride (some of them pretty long days) between stops to visit friends and family; no camping or hotels for accommodations, so not really a “Trip.”

The first real “Trip” on a bike was in 1987, 2 weeks from NY to California and back to visit a friend for the weekend, camping along the way. And that did it for me, I was hooked. Canadian Maritimes, Florida, coast to coast on US Rt 20, finally realizing a long-held dream in 1995 – a bike trip to Alaska. My brother and I had talked about such a trip to Alaska for years, and almost did it together in a few years earlier, but he instead fell in love, got married and started raising a family, so I set out for Alaska alone. Along the way, at a gas stop in northern British Columbia, I met three “old” bikers from the west coast (68, 72 and 73 years old, while I was just a kid in my mid 40’s). We got talking, I found out they were also headed to Alaska with a similar itinerary planned, and they were also camping along the way. They invited me to ride along with them if I was interested, we ended up riding together for two and a half weeks.

My first trip to Europe was a tour in the Alps in 2001, which was also my first tour with an organized tour group and staying in hotels instead of camping. So far, all of my bike trips have been in North America and Europe, so I’m really looking forward to this Silk Road trip to expand my travel resume.

In 1999, I met summer intern at work who came from Germany and returned there after learning to ride a bike (and working a bit at his internship) here in the US. We have kept in touch since then, and have taken a lot of rides together, alternating between him coming here (North America) and me going to Europe. Trips with him (and occasionally another friend or two) have included Norway’s Nordkapp, several other countries in Europe, return trips (for me) to Newfoundland and Alaska, and a few others. Camping along the way is our normal mode of travel.

I first met Helge and learned of the Silk Road Adventure back around 2006 or 2007 when he gave a presentation at my local BMW shop. I’ve been dreaming of this ride since then so I’m really excited to finally be going. This will be only my second organized tour and second tour not camping. I met a couple of our fellow riders last summer on a ride to the Pacific Northwest, and look forward to meeting the rest shortly.

Bikes I currently ride include several BMWs, a Moto Guzzi V11Sport, and a Suzuki Bandit with a Hannigan High Performance Sidecar attached. I’ll be riding my F650GS (single cylinder) for this ride.

My name is Ken Southam, and I am a 58-year-old Canadian who lives in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. I am happily married to Sarah who will be staying home for this adventure while I am embarking on an epic motorcycle adventure along the Great Silk Road with GlobeRiders®.

In early 2014, Sarah and I bicycled (pedal) Vietnam and Cambodia and then in July I motorcycled the US Continental Divide with a buddy while our wives were our support crew usually arriving at our planned daily destinations long before us via the interstate highways while we sometimes got lost riding the dirt, mud, gravel on roads less traveled (the Divide).

I am really looking forward to spending the next 8 weeks traveling through 10 different countries during May and June 2015. My adventure starts in Istanbul, Turkey on May 3, 2015, and I will travel through Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and China. The trip will finish 12,800 km later in Xi’an, China on June 27, 2015.

The motorcycle trip has been many months in the planning, and I look forward to exploring new countries and experiencing new cultures, while enjoying the diverse landscapes along the way. You may follow my adventures on my personal blog: 2015SilkRoad

My name is Joe Hutt but I’ve been called a few other things on a motorcycle.

I live in Springfield, Il right now and I’m not sure how I got here.

The picture to the right is my wife Marlene, we’ve been together a few years. We’ve raised 9 children. I’ve spent a bunch of years racing, fixing and riding motorcycles. I’ve done a number of Helge’s tours and finished most of them. I’ve done a lot of desert riding in Nevada and Baja California as you can see from the picture on the right near San Juanico.

I’ve been trying to do this tour for a number of years and this time I just decided to do it come hell or high water.

As for my working life, I designed software to build computer chips for 42 years and now I’m retired. The last picture is at the Fish River Canyon.

My name is John McKittrick. I live in Helena, Montana with my lovely wife Mary Dalton-McKittrick. We have been married for 18 years. Mary is a CPA and is the Controller at Shodair Children’s Hospital in Helena, MT. We have two daughters Molly McKittrick-Phillips and Ashley Dalton. They live in San Diego, CA & Huston, TX with their husbands Ryan & Ozan, respectively. We have 2 beautiful granddaughters, Avery and Piper who live in San Diego. They are the current light of our lives as our daughters have grown into real people and the granddaughters are……….well, they're just cool!

I am a retired architect, one of the “legacy partners” of Schlenker & McKittrick Architects, P.C. in Helena, MT. I practiced architecture for 32 years. I also retired from the Lewis & Clark County Sheriff’s Office after 20 years of service as the Captain of the Sheriff’e Reserve, during which time, I served 5 years as a sniper on the SWAT Team. I remain a sworn Deputy Sheriff in Lewis & Clark County, although my commitment is much diminished.

I decide life is short, so I needed to ride my motorcycle more and work less. I began riding in 1966 on a Yamaha 250 road bike, took a long break while being educated, raising a family and building a business. I started riding again about 10 years ago. During that time, I’ve owned several Harley Davidson motorcycles but, the first time I road a BMW R1200GSA, I fell in love. Their are so many beautiful places to ride a dual purpose bike in and around Montana and the GSA opened the doors to many great adventures. I currently own a K1600GTL and a R1200GSA. My wife Mary, loves to ride but is still working so our rides together are weekend cruises. I have ridden to Alaska twice, including a trip to Prudhoe Bay last summer and a multitude of adventure riding experiences in neighboring states and provinces of Canada.

I am an avid outdoorsman and have had the great opportunity to experience Montana during the time before big money started closing access for the working man. I have hunted and fished in many parts of the Northwest and Alaska and have had the good fortune to do the same in Africa and New Zealand.

Well to summarize 57 years of my life would be a rather hard express here, but here are some high lights of my life journe. I have been married to my wife Somer for 34 years and we are best friends and love living life together. I have two daughters, a 31 year old who is a Hospices Nurse Practitioner and my other daughter is training to become a McDonald’s owner operator. I’m very fortunate to have a wife that understands I need to get away and see the world. I’m also a pilot, Scuba Diver, Back Country Hiker and love to trail run with my dog Striker. I currently consider my higher education as coming from the Marines. They taught me to go after things and all you have to do is work hard for it. To this day I still believe that to be true… I did spend my time in college, but that's not where I learned my lessons in life.

I have own around, give or take, 39 motorcycles and I just bought a new 2014 R1200GSA W/C which is in route to Istanbul. I still have in my stable a 2006 BMW GS, 2008 BMW GSA, 2012 BMW RT, 1977 BMW R100RT, 2006 XR 650L, 1974 Bultaco Pursang, and 1973 Yamaha 175 CT3. I haven’t any plans on stopping riding for some time to come. My first bike was a 1968 mini trail 50 that was my first motorcycle which I bought with money earn mowing lawns and anything else to earn money at that time. My family camped a lot and I was able to explore with this new bike of mine from early dawn to the setting sun. Back then my parents started to ration my fuel to keep me closer to the camp sites or I would be gone all day until the gas was gone. Well fast forward a few years and I was racing motor cross and was sponsored by Auburn Motor Sports to ride 1975 250 Bultaco Pursang. Those were the most fun years with me only thinking about motorcycles and keeping them running for the next race. I raced, I worked on them and then went and race again. This went on every week for several years. I did make room for girl friends as long as they were good with traveling to the race tracks and being my “pit tootsie” probably would not be political correct to say that now; but that’s how it was.

Well fast forward again and it is 1976 and I’m 18 years old and looking for an adventure again and that is when I join the United States Marine Corps. I had a great time with this Extraordinary outfit. I had some of the best times of my life with this gun club and also my worst. But what I can tell you after 20 years of active duty, I would not change any of it. I traveled throughout the world and had a blast. Rented motorcycles in Thailand, Philippines, Okinawa, and Korea. I also have to add I rode an elephant once. During the time I was in the Marines I did own several different motorcycles: a Harley Davidson Ultra Classic and a couple of motocross bikes. Well now I retired from the marines in October 1998.

Now I’m a McDonald’s Restaurant Owner Operator. I have been in the McDonald’s system from January 1999 to present. I currently own two stores in Helena, Montana, and for a few years I also own two stores in Southeastern Idaho before selling them and moving to the big Sky State of Montana. I love Montana and we have some exceptional riding areas here that I love to ride as often as I can. Weather in Montana is always an issue and our summers are way to short. I usually ride to Canada at least once a year and head up and around Jasper and through the ice fields. Great riding and I love all the twisties. I have also been to Alaska three times and once a solo trip to Inuvik. I took a solo trip to Nova Scotia and Newfoundland which was a great trip and I wish I had taken more time to really take it all in. Two weeks was not near enough time.

Well with all that riding I had done I still had an itch to see more of the world but I’m a real busy guy and I don’t have the time to plan these awesome trips we now take. That’s where GlobeRiders came in to play. I did my research and found Helge's trips to be what fit me and what I wanted to do. I went to Seattle, WA, and saw him give a talk at Ride West BMW about one of his past adventure to South America and I was hooked. I booked the South Africa trip with him in 2013 and had an exceptional time. One of the things that you don’t really think of is the new friends you make on these trips. Just about everybody that went on the trip was very interesting and enriched my understanding of people and how they live their lives. I have since invited Bence from Spain, who was on the South Africa 2013 tour, to come to Montana and ride. He air-shipped his bike from Spain to Seattle and we rode to Alaska together along with my neighbor John McKittrick; who is also going on the Silk Road Adventure. What I like about this kind of trip is that there are so many of us with like-minded ideas and it’s easy to talk with each other. They are all very adventurous riders and that appeals to me as that is how I have lived my entire life. I really don’t know how many more of these truly amazing trips I will take, but I hope a couple more are still in my future. Did I say Cape Town to Cairo, South America and maybe Russia? Life is short and it’s time to get her done.

My name is Bob Dittmeier and I live in Richmond, VA with my wife Barb and our (not nearly so feral anymore) cat Mama. My riding started many years ago on BSAs. They included a Victor, Shooting Star & Hornet. Sure now wish I still had them. A lot of that early riding was off-road with the Victor & later on Yamaha dirt bikes. The 2 other BSAs, Yamaha and Honda road bikes followed. After moving to Richmond from St. Louis in 1994 I started doing road trips with a group of guys from Richmond BMW Riders club. After a few trips with a small group of them it didn't take long for me to determine that my next bike would be a BMW. That same small group of us have made many many trips together crossing both the U.S. and Canada on different occasions. I'm currently riding a R1200GS and am considering the H2O cooled 1200 Adventure.

Concerning my background almost my entire career has been in the lubricants industry and somewhat surprisingly, at least to me, with just one company. By the time we all meet in Istanbul I will be (halleluiah) retired. Just never enough time to travel when you are working. Though my wife doesn't ride with me we do love travel and still have a long list of places all over the world to still visit. We are planning on arriving in Istanbul 5 or more days early to see the things we missed our first time there. She will be headed home when we start our adventure.

I am a Canadian, living in Victoria BC and I have retired from full time work in the natural resource management area. I worked as a civil engineer specializing in water resources.

I have been riding since the early 1960s but mostly using my bike as a commuter vehicle or for weekend fun. I have done my share of thousand mile long weekends, but I have never done a cross-country trip. I am, however, an experienced traveler. I have done long canoe trips in the Yukon and Northwest Territories and have done many walking trips, including walking across England from coast to coast (200 miles). In February 2014, my wife and I walked 100 miles in the Samburu District of northern Kenya in aid of elephant conservation.

I have owned several motorcycles over the years. I currently still have a 1953 Matchless 500 single and I have almost completed a frame-up restoration of a 1964 Velocette Venom clubman, also a 500 single. In 2014, I sold my 2006 Suzuki 650 V-Strom and bought a BMW F800 GS for this trip. I am looking forward to meeting everyone and sharing adventures on the Silk Road.

Jim Mattison

In college (late ‘60’s) I read James Michener’s novel Caravans, a story that took place in Afghanistan and the Khyber Pass. It was an amazing adventure and stirred my imagination. Riding in a camel caravan through the Kyber Pass has been on my list for many years. But, with our present day political climate, traveling through Afghanistan is limited!

When I heard of this GlobeRiders ride I had to be part of it. GlobeRiders is my first professional moto tour!

I’m 69 years old, and live in Orange County, California. I’m married to Susan and have 2 adult sons with families and 3 granddaughters.

In 1980 I started Abracadabra Presentation Graphics, Inc., a video, presentation, & staging production company. We design and produce corporate special events - i.e. international & national sales, marketing, financial, technology, training and HR meetings throughout the US, China, Mexico, and Canada.

For fun I flew hang gliders in the '70-'90, which lead to HG stunt work, before retiring to motorcycle play. My main ride is a 2003 Yamaha FJR1300, two 2004 Suzuki V-Strom DL1000 (one in California and one in Germany), a 1988 Harley Springer bar bike, and a 1980 Honda XR-250 dirt bike.

I have completed 3 Iron Butt Rally's, 11 Days-11,000 miles - 2001 '98HD, 2003 '03FJR1300 & 2005 ‘03FJR1300. May 2004 I rode 8,871 miles through all 49 states and 3 Countries - Mexico, US & Canada, in 7-days, 11-hours. In 2010/2011 I rode 11,100 miles (17,848 km) from Deadhorse/Prudhoe Bay, Alaska south through Canada, the US, Mexico, Central America, to Ushuaia, Argentina.

In 2012 I started to use KnopfTours Heidelberg, Germany as my European basecamp. I'm slowly making the rounds to the Italian Dolomites, Norway's Nord Capp, France's Normandy coast, and a million more places to visit.

I'm riding a 2004 Suzuki V-Strom DL1000. I'm not a highly skilled bike rider, have no special skills, I'm kinda slow, my bikes all take dirt naps, but I manage to get to where I'm going. I have a learn by doing philosophy and I hope to learn from the riders who've "been there and done that!" I'm looking forward to meeting and traveling with this adventure oriented group.

I am a displaced Wyoming native living in Thailand for 23 years.  2015 is the start of my easing into semi-retirement from the retail planning + design company I started in 1997, www.rkdretailiq.com.  We will have to see how “semi” goes, as with technology connections one is never too far from the office so I am hoping for large stretches of no phone signal.

It has taken me a long time to be able to answer the simple question of who I am without referring to my company or my business so my working title: artist, traveler and dreamer best sums me up until I can claim the title of completely retired.

We have great timing on our side and I can think of no better ride than the one we are about to undertake and I very much look forward to getting to know our group, my bike and myself a little better as a result.

This will be my longest continuous ride and very much looking forward to leaning the tricks of the road from our more experienced team.

I have ridden motorcycles off and on since my late teen years with several years without a bike for such dubious reasons as education, career and logistics.  That won’t happen again.  I will be riding a R1200 GSA, which is my 3rd GS and second GSA and have had this type of bike since 2000 and have a F800GS in the garage in Pinedale, Wyoming. 

I have been married for 20 years to my perfect partner, Piyaphan who I have just about convinced that the next long ride will involve a sidecar.  We have one son Loy who is in college.  Together we are quite a team of travelers.

My name is Patrick Owen and I live in Cape Town, South Africa. I have been riding bikes since leaving school (almost 40 years!). My riding nowadays is mainly off-road touring. I presently ride a BMW 1200 adv. (2008) but should take delivery of the 2014 adventure within the next two months which I will be taking on the trip.

Living in Cape Town I have done most of the off-road routes in and around the area together with Namibia, Lesotho and one trip up to Tanzania via Zambia and Botswana. We have lots of great riding right on our doorstep in Cape Town. All my previous trips have been self-organized so I am looking forward to having Helge handle the logistics.

I have been eying the GlobeRiders tours with envy for a number of years and had hoped to do the previous Silk Road trip. Unfortunately it didn’t fit in with my schedule that year. In addition to biking, I fly gyro-copters and shift between the two depending on trips coming up.

For starters Chris loves to ride motorbikes, any kind, anywhere, any way.

He has been riding motorbikes since age 15 and got his first bike, a 125 Suzuki at age 16. He rode enduros and motocross during his high school years in Iowa.

After graduating from the University of Iowa with a degree in pharmacy, Chris moved first to California and then to Seattle. Wanderlust knocked and he took a position working as a pharmacist at a US Army hospital in Wuerzburg Germany. While living in Wuerzburg he bought his first BMW an R80RT.

After 175,000 km riding around Europe and 5 years living in Germany , Chris returned to Seattle where he currently works at Harborview Medical Center.

After moving back to Seattle he has continued his worldwide motorcycle touring, riding to more than 65 countries.

Chris first met Helge in 1996 on a motorcycle trip in South America. Since then he has worked with Helge and Sterling on a couple of GlobeRiders productions including Iceland and IndoChina DVDs.

He can't wait for his next journey on his favorite ride, a BMW R12000GS Adventure.

This is a big year in so many ways, lots of life changing events both good and bad. Regardless I like to do my very best to be optimistic and turning 60 can be a good experience or what do you say?

I have been so much looking forward to this Silk Road Adventure 2015 with all its challenges and changes. A new itinerary will take us through Iran and Tajikistan, places that have not been on our agenda in the past. It is experiences like this journey that keep me going these days. I love traveling and what better way to do this than on a motorcycle.

Despite all the bad news from the media that we are overwhelmed with every day it is great to be able to go and see the other side of the story as we follow the ancient Silk Road from Istanbul to Xian.

If you have family members or loved ones taking part in this journey I promise you we will do our very best to take good care of them. GlobeRiders work with the best of the best when it comes to partners in the countries we are traveling through. The shared logistics on putting together this journey is daunting, but that is part of the Adventure. We have had an online Forum for close to one year now in preparations for this journey; time to go riding.
